The Host

Jay Stevens

I've been a paramedic and firefighter in the Salt Lake Valley for 28 years. For 26 of those I've also been a professional emergency backup goaltender, which means dressing for pro games and hoping the phone never rings. I've coached for 19 years and hosted a hockey podcast for 10.

I'm not a beat reporter and I don't work for the team. Nobody clears my questions. That means I can say a power play looked bad when it looked bad, and it also means I don't get the first phone call when news breaks — so I'll tell you where I got something and who reported it first.

What I bring instead is the view from inside the room: what a coach is actually managing, what a goalie is actually seeing, and why a roster decision that looks strange on paper makes sense on a bench. If I get something wrong, I'll say so on the next episode.
